Well, it’s official: Winnipeg will be getting a National Hockey League team while Atlanta will be bowing out. It was revealed weeks ago that the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers had led to the franchise wanting to move to Winnipeg. The decision had to be approved by the NHL’s Board of Governors, and the Board of Governors did just that in their recent meeting with a unanimous decision.
Even though hockey fans in Winnipeg are likely ecstatic over the decision, league commissioner Gary Bettman offered his condolences to Atlanta fans. According to NHL.com, he said, “Obviously, everybody is sorry and distressed and unhappy that we found ourselves in the circumstance where our franchise was leaving Atlanta. We feel particularly sorry for the fans over there. But obviously, based on the reception that we’ve gotten, everybody is extremely excited about the opportunities in Winnipeg for our return.”
The name of the Winnipeg team has yet to revealed, but the team will be playing at the MTS Centre. The team was bought by True North Sports & Entertainment for $170 million and in addition paid the NHL $60 million to relocate.
