The Toronto Maple Leafs will have two new faces on the bench during the next season. The choice came from the team’s president and general manager, Brian Burke. Burke decided to let go assistant coaches Keith Acton and Tim Hunter and replace them with new coaches Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin. Both will be helping head coach Ron Wilson.
According to NHL.com, Burke narrowed down his candidates based on whether or not they had head coaching experience. He also said that the decision had little to do with the dismissed coaches, specifically. Burke explained, “We haven’t had the players to have special teams at a level where they need to be. The general manager deserves some blame when you make a coaching staff change and I’ll take that blame.”
Scott Gordon was a goalie before he started coaching, playing with the NHL’s Quebec Nordiques in the 1990s. His coaching career has been even more storied than his playing one, coaching the New York Islanders as their head coach and also helping to coach the U.S. Men’s National Hockey Team in the recent Olympics. Greg Cronin coached in the college ranks earlier in his career and eventually became the head coach of the Northeastern Huskies.
