  • Austin Sings Praises of Coach Garrett
    February 4, 2011

It appears as though Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin is making the interview rounds as of late. According to Football NewsNow, Austin had some glowing remarks about the Cowboys’ new quarterback, Jason Garrett. Garrett was put at the helm midway through the season after an abysmal start under head coach Wade Phillips. Once the season ended, the Cowboys dropped the interim from his title and officially made him the head coach for 2011. Austin said of Garrett, “The ship got tightened up. Jason [Garrett] stuck to his guns and held up the same standard for the whole second half of the season.”

  • Jets RB LaDainian Tomlinson Considers Options
    February 3, 2011

New York Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson is still under contract with the team for one more year, but the 31-year-old all-star hasn’t yet completely made the commitment to return to the football field next season. LT has been on one wild ride since arriving in New York from San Diego last year, and although he still has a year left on the two-year agreement he signed with the Jets last season, Tomlinson won’t rule out the possibility of retirement this offseason.

  • Miles Austin Already Focused on Offseason Workout
    February 3, 2011

The offseason means different things to different players in the National Football League. Some players use the first few months to simply take some time off and relax, which often means much harder work farther down the line. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin, though, already has a plan lined up for this offseason.

  • Bengals Hire Jay Gruden to Run Offense
    February 3, 2011

The Bengals have acted quickly in replacing former offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski, agreeing with Jay Gruden to take over the job.  Gruden, younger brother of former NFL head coach and current ESPN analysts Jon Gruden, coached the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League in 2010.  Gruden has his work cut out for him, as the Cincy offense struggled mightily throughout the 2010 campaign, despite their talent level.  One has to wonder if this hire changes the stance of quarterback Carson Palmer, who recently requested a trade from the Bengals.  Palmer threatened to retire if he was not moved.

  • Falcons Extend Smith
    February 3, 2011

The Atlanta Falcons have given head coach Mike Smith a three-year contract extension.  Smith was hired three seasons ago and was one of the less heralded hires of that offseason.  However, it quickly became clear that Smith was cut out for the gig, as he led the Falcons to a huge rebound year in 2008 that saw the team reach the postseason after posting the league’s third-worst record the previous year.  The Falcons earned the top seed in the NFC this postseason but were unable to defeat the eventual NFC champion Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

  • Ponder Gaining Draft Buzz
    February 2, 2011

Christian Ponder’s college career didn’t go quite as planned, as injuries plagued him throughout his tenure at Florida State.  However, Ponder appears to have firmly planted himself on NFL radars after being named MVP of the Senior Bowl.  “Ponder got better every day and this is first time we’ve seen him fully healthy since early October,” writes ESPN’s Todd McShay.  ”While all the focus was on Washington’s Jake Locker, Ponder quietly went about his business and wound up turning a lot of heads by the end of the week, including being named Senior Bowl MVP after completing 7 of 13 passes for 132 yards and two TDs in the South’s win.”

  • Brady Named Offensive Player of the Year
    February 2, 2011

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has been named as the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year for the 2010 season.  Brady has a magnificent season in which the Patriots were able to secure the top playoff seed in the AFC.  Though the Patriots lost their first playoff game to the New York Jets, their regular season was extremely successful and powered by Brady’s consistency.  “I feel our team really grew together over the course of the season.  It was a privilege to be a part of this team,” Brady told reporters.  ”My only disappointment is that we couldn’t take advantage of our opportunity in the playoffs, but hopefully we learn from that and use it as motivation toward accomplishing our goals for next season.”

  • Jets Legendary RB Curtis Martin up for Hall of Fame
    February 2, 2011

The New York Jets scored big in the late 1990s when they lured running back Curtis Martin out of the grips of the New England Patriots with a six-year, $36 million offer. Pete Carroll and Robert Kraft let Martin go to their bitter enemies the Jets with reluctance (Carroll later called it the biggest regret of his coaching tenure with the Patriots), and rightfully so. He went on to achieve success in the highest with the New York Jets, becoming one of the greatest receivers of his day. Martin left quite the imprint in New York after spending eight productive seasons with the Jets, and now it’s only fitting that he’s up for Hall of Fame contention.

  • Eagles to Franchise Vick
    February 1, 2011

A league source has told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Philadelphia Eagles plan to place their franchise tag on quarterback Michael Vick this offseason.  The franchise tag enables a team to keep a player for a year without awarding him any kind of contract, but they have to pay him big bucks.  “Franchising Vick will give the Eagles contractual control of two quality quarterbacks, one of whom they will be able to shop,” writes Schefter.  ”Kolb still is under contract for 2011 at the cap-friendly price of $1.4 million, making him an even more desirable commodity.”
