When asked the question about who is the best Manning quarterback, the answer, of course, is supposed to be Peyton Manning. He was the golden child coming up through Tennessee, where he played well enough to end up as the number one draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts, a decision that has proven to be one that has paid off ten times over for the entire city of Indianapolis. Peyton has put together an unbelievable career, one that would usher him into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot even if he never played another game. But with Peyton’s career now in doubt, his brother Eli has shown that he might be equally as good.

With Eli prepping for his second Super Bowl appearance, the backers are starting to finally come out. Though it was Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady that put up the unbelievable stats this season, it was Eli who put it all together at the end of the season and no one is playing better than Eli right now as he circles his second Super Bowl title. Of course, Eli will have to beat out Brady and a seasoned Patriots team, but Eli is showing that he might have a clutch gene that Peyton simply doesn’t have. Though Peyton will probably have the better statistical compilation at the end of his career, Eli is looking for a second Super Bowl ring that could tilt the scales at Manning family barbecues.

With the win, the 49ers now move on to take on the Giants after New York shocked the world by beating the 15-1 Green Bay Packers in Green Bay. The Giants, under the great play of quarterback Eli Manning, have been playing inspired football over the last month, as they snuck into the playoffs and have now beaten two quality NFC opponents. The 49ers, meanwhile, get to stay at home and wait the coming of the Giants, just a step away from the Super Bowl after a disastrous 2010 season. If the 49ers can win and go to the Super Bowl, it will end up as one of the greatest rebounds in the history of the NFL.

There is a lot of concern that the 2011 NFL season won’t happen, or will at least be shortened by the two sides’ differences. The four major issues at hand are the allocation of the $9 billion the league makes per season, a rookie wage scale, an 18-game season and retirement benefits. President Obama weighed in this week, essentially saying that he sees no need for himself to step in and get involved at all, alluding to the idea that any business that makes $9 billion should be able to work things out for itself.

The Dallas Cowboys have made plenty of coaching changes this offseason, but a move by another NFL coach’s move sent waves through the league. New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has decided to keep his job at the helm in New Orleans but move his family to Dallas. Moving to Dallas sparked rumors that he is contemplating a coaching move as well, but Payton has reiterated he aims to remain with the Saints.

He addressed the rumors with The Dallas Morning News, and said that it was always his aim to make it back to Dallas to retire eventually. He explained, “The children are approaching high school. This is something that we made as a family decision. I made as a father and a husband. Beth and I spent a lot of time discussing it. This doesn’t impact my job or work at all at anyway here. Our commitment is getting back to that Super Bowl and winning football games.”

Seems pretty straightforward to me. The Cowboys don’t seem to be paying much mind to the Saints coach living in their city, so maybe everyone else should follow suit.

The Tennessee Titans won’t get the chance to interview Bill Callahan for their open offensive coordinator position, as the New York Jets have denied the Titans’ request to meet with their assistant head coach. Callahan, still under contract with the Jets, won’t be allowed to interview for the job with the Titans, where he would have potentially replaced Mike Heimerdinger. Instead, Callahan will continue his tenure with the Jets, where he is also the run game coordinator.

Bill Callahan has been a Jets coach for two seasons. Prior to his stint with New York, he was head coach for the Oakland Raiders and University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. He joined the Jets in 2008 and will be part of the team for at least another season.

This isn’t the first time the Jets have blocked an interview request this offseason. The New York team also denied the Raiders an interview with secondary coach Dennis Thurman. Denying interviews is perfectly fine by NFL rules, which state that if coaches are still under contract with the team, the team has the right to refuse interview requests from other teams around the league.

Jimmy Johnson coached the Cowboys from 1989-1993, leading the team to two Super Bowl Championships in that time. He went on to coach the Miami Dolphins before giving up coaching to become an analyst on television.

Because of his history, Johnson has earned the right to speak on all things Cowboys, so everyone listened when he recently spoke about the Cowboys’ new head coach, Jason Garrett. Garrett played under Johnson, so he knows him fairly well. According to the Dallas Morning News, Johnson said of Garrett, “He’s very intelligent; he’s got a passion for the game; I like what he’s doing; he put in some pad practices last year. I think that helped and from my understanding, he’s going to be in pads more in training camp, which I think will help him. It was the same thing we did for our Super Bowls. If you practice in sweats, you get sloppy, you get bad habits. I was always a stickler that I wanted our guys in pads.”

New York Jets placekicker Nick Folk is up for free agency this offseason, and the Jets are taking no chances at losing him without first finding a replacement. Rex Ryan and the Jets have found some potential competition for Folk in UFL standout Nick Novak, signing the former Florida Tusker to their roster this week.

Folk had a largely up-and-down season in 2010, and even if he does re-sign with the Jets, he can certainly expect to have to fight to retain his starting position now that Novak is in the mix. Novak made 15 of 18 field goals last season with the Tuskers, earning the UFL’s special teams MVP award for his golden foot. He’s been on several different NFL teams since his entry into the pros in 2005, spending time with the Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals, Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers before last year took him to the UFL.

Now that Novak has signed a contract with the Jets, it’s becoming less and less likely that Nick Folk will return to the field in green and white next season. Still, Folk can’t be counted out of contention just yet, leaving the competition on special teams to heat up this offseason in the meantime.

Gabbert doesn’t necessarily grade out to be worth it at number three, but a lot can change between now and April, and quarterbacks always tend to climb team’s boards as we inch closer to draft day. Buffalo certainly needs a franchise quarterback to develop, and if they end up thinking that Gabbert is there man I don’t see a reason not to pull the trigger, unless they can move down a couple of spots and grab him. Bowers would make a lot of sense for a team that hasn’t been able to generate much of a pass rush since Bruce Smith, that’s right Bruce Smith, left town.

Darrelle Revis isn’t done with his outspoken antics after demanding over the weekend that the Jets need to re-sign Antonio Cromartie. He’s now moved on to the wide receiver position, lobbying to get Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco suited up in green and white next season. Jets fans know that when Revis talks, people listen, but could No. 85 really be headed to New York?

It’s safe to say Ocho is finished in Cincy, where he and head coach Marvin Lewis have butted heads for perhaps the last time. Ochocinco would be a good fit in New York with a team (and head coach) as boisterous as he is, and with Darrelle Revis on his side, perhaps the Jets will take a good look at the receiver.

CBS New York reported on Revis’ comments to the media earlier this week regarding Chad Ochocinco, with the cornerback saying, “I want Chad to come here and play for us, to be a Jet. I’ve been in his ear a lot about it this week… I think he could do well here. I’ve been telling him to come here.”

On the other end of this, Ochocinco has already laid out his cards when it comes to the Jets. On an episode of “The T.Ocho Show” last month, Ocho said he’d love to play Rex Ryan’s crew. “They will make it to this point every year,” he said. “I’d do anything to play for someone like Rex Ryan or anyone who has that type of mentality.”

Will Chad Ochocinco become a Jet this offseason?

The Dallas Cowboys have been making many chances this offseason, starting with making Jason Garrett their new head coach. Because of the status of a new collective bargaining agreement (or lack thereof), the Cowboys haven’t made many roster moves as of yet, but they have continued to shuffle and add new names to their coaching staff.

According to The Kansas City Star, the Cowboys have signed Brian Baker to be the team’s new defensive line coach. Baker was set to be the defensive line coach for the University of North Carolina next season but instead decided to return to the college ranks. Baker has 15 years of experience in the NFL coaching ranks. The latest was with the Carolina Panthers, where he spent the past two seasons.

Although Baker isn’t specifically familiar with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s system, the Cowboys apparently have enough confidence in him to hire him anyway. Once the Cowboys have solidified their coaching staff, they will likely turn to their roster and begin working.
