Chargers Need to Get Tougher

What is clear about the AFC looking at the teams currently still alive in the playoffs is that they are all mentally tough, cold weather football teams.  While the Chargers have been an explosive team for a while, it hasn’t translated into a lot of playoff success while New England, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and New York have all seen plenty of postseason winning in recent years.  Though the Chargers should throw the ball, mainly due to the incredible talent of Philip Rivers, they need to find a way to toughen up their roster so that they can compete with teams better prepared for a postseason run.

A game definitely to watch this weekend for the Chargers will be the Ravens and the Steelers.  Both the Ravens and Steelers play a smash-mouth style of physical football that allows them to remain consistent all season long.  Neither team has a quarterback as good as Philip Rivers, yet they both won 12 games this season and have a variety of ways to beat you.  The Chargers, on the other hand, often seem to have all their eggs in one basket; if Rivers doesn’t have a good game, the Chargers don’t usually win.  A big step in the offseason will be for the Chargers to find guys capable of dominating the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, which could eventually help the Chargers compete against the more hard-nosed teams in the league.
