After a great season with Kansas City, Matt Cassel is now headed to the Pro Bowl, where he will replace Tom Brady. Brady recently had a minor foot surgery following the season, though he’s expected to be ready for training camp for the start of next year. Cassel had easily his best year as a pro, helping guide the Chiefs to a 10-6 record and having one of the highest QB ratings in the league in the process. After being fairly mediocre in Kansas City in his first season with the team (2009), Cassel ended up with a 27:7 touchdown to interception ratio.
The news of him replacing Brady is also a big odd, as he used to be Brady’s backup in New England. When Brady went down with an injury in 2007, Cassel got his big break and guided the Pats to an 11-5 record, though they didn’t even make the playoffs that year. Due to his solid season in New England, though, Cassel was able to get a trade to Kansas City, where he has developed as a legitimate franchise quarterback. As the Chargers know, Cassel continues to improve and has turned Dwayne Bowe into one of the better receivers in the entire league. If the Chargers are going to get back to the top of the division, they’ll have to beat Cassel to get there.
