    August 3, 2011

The New England Patriots are a team that has a specific way of doing things. Their methods have earned them a reputation as a top franchise, and also one that has been able to rehabilitate players who have been nothing but trouble for other teams. Players consequently know they can find a second (or third or fourth) chance with the Patriots and tend to do well under the structure.

  • Haynesworth Has Lot to Prove
    August 3, 2011

It was classic New England when the Patriots scooped up Albert Haynesworth in a trade with the Washington Redskins recently.  While many teams were likely afraid of Haynesworth, who got a bad reputation in Tennessee before having a disastrous run in Washington, the Patriots were eager to take on the talented player with the off-field problems.  Now, it seems that Haynesworth knows that he has a chance to change the public’s opinion of him, and he seems to be in the perfect position to do exactly that.  Following the example of guys like Randy Moss, Corey Dillon and others, Haynesworth is just the latest talented superstar with a dubious past ready to get back to business, and that’s something the Patriots are counting on.

Now that the lockout is officially over, this offseason is shaping up to be one of big changes for many teams. Players who have been with teams for years have departed in free agency or through trades. One of the biggest to do just that is wide receiver Chad Ochocinco—formerly Chad Johnson—who is now with the  New England Patriots after a much-followed career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

  • Fantasy Spotlight: Tom Brady
    July 10, 2011

Tom Brady put up the type of season in 2010 that made people go: “huh?”  Without a deep threat and with his best wideout coming off of major knee surgery, Brady posted 36 touchdowns versus just four interceptions, making his season look like a Tecmo Super Bowl season.  Brady ended up with far and away the top QB rating in the league – a ludicrous 111 – and re-established himself as a major force in fantasy football.  Even with his return to prominence, however, should you trust Brady to put up another big season worthy of the high position you would have to draft him?

  • NFL Negotiations Move Forward
    June 23, 2011

The NFL owners and players were back discussing the ongoing collective bargaining agreement, which has thrust the league into a lockout that has had the Patriots biding their time until they can officially get back to the gridiron.  Meeting just a couple hours outside of Boston, the NFL moved forward with their discussions about how to split revenue, as well as how teams will be required to spend money in the future.  Players are still seeking about 48% of the total revenue and a new potential agreement would waive a $1 billion credit that was previously expected to go to the owners.

  • Prominent Players Want More Benefits
    June 22, 2011

The NFL has been taking a lot of heat lately, but not just for the ongoing labor contract between the owners and players.  Now some of the Hall of Famers are starting to voice their opinion about how the NFL treats its players, including former Buffalo Bill Joe DeLamielleure.  The Hall of Fame offensive lineman spoke at a press conference backing the ongoing lawsuit, which has players asking for better long-term benefits.  DeLamielleure, who has had a variety of surgeries over the years and walks with a noticeable limp, says that he would like the NFL to provide a pension that reflects the profitability of the league as a whole.  The former lineman has been an open critic of the NFL for years, though his voice has gained a new platform with the current labor negotiations.

  • Players, League Get Closer
    June 21, 2011

New details are emerging about a deal that could end ending the current NFL lockout and getting players back on the playing field.  Even if the current deal being shopped hasn’t yet been signed, it looks like some version of the current deal will be agreed upon fairly soon, as long as progress continues to be made.  For starters, it looks like the revenue split issue is finally coming together, with the players reportedly getting close to the 48% of total revenue that they were seeking.  Though the NFL owners were hoping for something substantially lower, it looks like the players will end up getting at least part of what they wanted – assuming there are no more major hurdles to climb over.

  • Kraft Looking to Getting “Football Back”
    June 17, 2011

Though Patriots owner Robert Kraft still said that the labor negotiations are far from over, he remained optimistic that both sides remain serious in their discussions.  For Kraft, who referred to himself as a fan first, getting football back underway is crucial not only to players and owners but the rest of the country that counts on football as well.  Even if this type of banter could make people a little bit uneasy, as it’s a sport after all, football has undoubtedly become ingrained in the fabric of American culture.  Kraft pointed out that it isn’t just the fans either, as plenty of workers depend on the NFL each season as well, which is a wrinkle largely lost in the discussion of millionaires versus billionaires.

  • Belichick Helps Bruschi with Camp
    June 16, 2011

Tedy Bruschi got a little boost as his annual football camp recently, as his former coach, Bill Belichick, was on hand to give a few young football players some good advice.  Considering that players at the top of their profession listen closely to Belichick, it’s safe to say that the group of youngsters took his advice fairly seriously.  Belichick talked about learning to understand the fundamentals of the game before trying to do too much, which is good old-fashioned advice from the coach with an authoritarian reputation, and an ample eye for finding disciplined football players.
