For a while, it looked like the Chicago Bears were going to be playing in the first official preseason game of the season, the annual Hall of Fame game. Now, with the CBA just passed by the owners and awaiting the final passing by the players, the NFL ended up having to cancel the Bears-Rams game that was scheduled for Aug. 7. As teams scramble to get in playing shape with abbreviated training camps, the move makes logical sense and should allow both teams time to worry about putting together the best team possible instead of putting on an exhibition. Though the rest of the preseason is assumed to go on as planned, the NFL still might end up making some other additional changes.
As of Friday morning, the league was getting even closer to ratifying the new CBA, which would end the lockout that has lasted since March. It seems that both sides are working diligently to avoid losing any actual playing time, which in the end will benefit the fans as much as anyone. Though many are sure to be discouraged by seeing the business said of the NFL so exposed, it is the reality of modern professional sports that these issues will arise just as they would in any other industry. While many are whispering that the NBA will actually see a partial season in 2011-2012, the NFL seems to have proven capable of getting over their difficulties to not miss any actual time.
