Even if the Bears don’t make a big splash in the free agency period before the 2011 season, that doesn’t mean they aren’t still going out and trying to find new players that can give the roster a boost. The Bears will be taking a real look at Brad Smith of the New York Jets, a good peripheral player who should be able to help out the receiving corps of Chicago if they can strike a deal. But Brad Smith isn’t just a receiver as he’s also a multi-skilled player who can return kicks and even play a little quarterback if necessary.
Though the Bears still have their quarterback in Jay Cutler, giving a chance to open up the playbook is always a positive. As the NFL continues to evolve, we see more trick plays and unique formations than ever before, and Brad Smith could be the type of dynamic talent to help open up the field. The Bears still need a more traditional wide receiving threat, of course, but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t continue to look at unique players like Smith who can help change their team for the better. With the lockout now officially over, it’s time for the Bears to start building their team for the start of the regular season.
