Smith Goes Off in Carolina
September 12, 2011For fantasy owners, it was probably an easy call to tuck Steve Smith on the bench in week one, as expectations were minimal for rookie starting quarterback Cam Newton and the upside for Smith seemed to be limited. That proved to be a big mistake, however, as Smith and Newton got a connection going early and Smith ended up having one of the biggest fantasy days of the weekend. In the process, Newton threw for more than 400 yards in his debut and Smith finished with eight catches for 178 yards and two touchdowns, causing fantasy owners to scratch their heads and wish they could go back to before the beginning of the weekend.

Steve Smith: Will He Stay or Will He Go?
February 11, 2011Wide receiver Steve Smith is just about the only bright spot on the Carolina Panthers offense, but he might not be part of it for long. Smith, one of the older players on the Panthers roster, is unquestionably frustrated after not getting the ball much last season, with the team’s quarterbacking antics severely diminishing his numbers from previous seasons. Smith has the option of being traded this offseason, and that’s a definite option for the 32-year-old receiver, although it’s clear the Panthers won’t be willing to just let him walk.

Rivera Brings Chargers Offense to Carolina
February 10, 2011Last season, the Carolina Panthers ranked 32nd in the league in total yards and scoring. The San Diego Chargers, on the other side of the spectrum, led the league in total offense. As new head coach of the Panthers and old defensive coordinator of the Chargers, Ron Rivera hopes to bring some of San Diego’s offensive successes to Charlotte. Rivera has brought along former Chargers tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski to help transform the Carolina offense this year, and neither coach has anything to hide when talking about what changes they’ll bring from the Chargers to the Panthers.

Panthers Almost Ready to Focus on Draft
February 9, 2011With the Super Bowl finished, the Carolina Panthers are now in the spotlight as they make some decisions regarding the upcoming NFL Draft and which player they’ll select with that coveted No. 1 draft pick. The team seems to be taking one thing at a time, however, and they won’t dive into the draft headfirst until they’ve secured their coaching roster.

Panthers’ New Game: Tag (You’re it!)
February 8, 2011The Carolina Panthers haven’t used a franchise tag since placing defensive end Julius Peppers under the tag in 2009, but with uncertainty looming in labor negotiations, they could most certainly opt to place one of their impending free agents under the franchise tag this year. The question, then, is who that lucky (or unlucky, depending on the player) guy happens to be.

Panthers Hire Linebackers, Running Backs Coaches
February 7, 2011Moving on with the next coaching item on the team’s to-do list, Ron Rivera has taken the Carolina Panthers two steps closer this week to roster completion. Rivera filled spots for a new linebackers coach as well as a new running backs coach over the weekend, with his new assistants being Warren Belin and John Settle.

Panthers Lure Belin from Georgia
February 4, 2011Ron Rivera and the Carolina Panthers have hired yet another coach this week, luring Warren Belin from the University of Georgia to become the Panthers’ new linebackers coach. Belin has plenty of experience on the college circuit as a linebackers coach, and now he’ll join Carolina’s new defensive coordinator Sean McDermott – who he worked with at William & Mary in the mid-’90s – in Charlotte.

Panthers Check out Draft Options
February 3, 2011With the Senior Bowl taking place last weekend, every team in the NFL not named the Packers or Steelers is in a feeding frenzy over fresh meat about to head into the league. The NFL Draft is just two months away, and the Carolina Panthers have perhaps the most pressure of any other team this year in deciding which direction to go with the No. 1 overall pick.

Panthers Hire Offensive Consultant Proehl
February 2, 2011Another seasoned veteran has joined Ron Rivera and the Carolina Panthers’ coaching staff this week. Ricky Proehl, a former NFL player for several teams including the Panthers, has found his way back to Carolina. The team hired Proehl as an offensive consultant for next season, and he’ll work alongside new wide receivers coach Fred Graves as the Panthers construct a revamped offense this offseason.

Panthers Hire Assistants to Rivera
February 1, 2011Ron Rivera is still on a rampage trying to fill the open coaching positions on the Carolina Panthers roster, and the team made several changes this week regarding coaches. Here are some new coaches in Carolina to get acquainted with before next season.
