It was an ugly game, but someone had to win. Last night, the UConn Huskies beat the Butler Bulldogs to take the NCAA men’s basketball championship title, routing the Bulldogs in a low-scoring 53-41 contest. Both teams struggled to find the net as the Huskies and Bulldogs participated in one rough dogfight, and in the end it was Jim Calhoun’s crew of hoopsters that won the national title game.
Last night, Calhoun became the oldest coach to win a national title at age 68, also joining just four other college basketball coaches – John Wooden, Adolph Rupp, Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight – to win at least three titles in the history of NCAA basketball. The Huskies deserved the win after beating several other top teams throughout the tournament, even if last night’s game was a pitiful contest.
The Huskies, however, didn’t perform as pitifully as the Bulldogs. Brad Stevens’ usually-tough crew crumbled on the court, with all-star Matt Howard going just 1-for-13. Shelvin Mack, the Bulldogs’ best scorer, was 4-for-15 shooting, while Andrew Smith was 2-for-9, with all his shots in the paint. Shawn Vanzant, another Butler starter, was 2-for-10. After last night’s game, Stevens spoke with ESPN, saying, “Without question, 41 points and 12-of-64 is not good enough to win any game, let alone the national championship game.”
Congratulations, UConn!
