ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb breaks down the Pac-10 by ranking all of the teams. He has the Washington Huskies as his number one team right now. ”Despite a pending sexual assault investigation that Lorenzo Romar has said is “very serious” and despite losing Abdul Gaddy for the season, UW is still the team to beat in this league,” Gottlieb writes. ”In addition to Isaiah Thomas at the point and Matthew Bryan-Amaning inside, the Huskies have Aziz N’Diaye, a massive 7-foot center and a terrific shot-blocker who can change the game with his sheer mass.”
Gottlieb has the Arizona Wildcats at number two in the conference, but cautions that they could slide in the rankings with some tough matchups on the horizon. “Derrick Williams is the best player in the league,” he writes. ”He is a power forward who can score in transition, on the face up and at the low block. Stop him and you have a good chance of beating Zona. Momo Jones can be a hot-and-cold scorer and more than just a facilitator in the backcourt as a point guard. Next week will be a big test for the Wildcats, as they play at UW on Jan. 20, then at Wazzu two days later. Do not be surprised if they are fourth on this list next week.”
