A Look at the Spurs’ Chances
April 23, 2012The San Antonio Spurs weren’t supposed to be the team to snag the number one seed in the Western Conference, though that looks exactly like what’s about to happen. Every time that pundits look at the Spurs’ older roster and assume that the Spurs should finally be winding down, they come out and put together a season like this year, one in which their selfless style of ball carved up NBA defenses all season long. As the Spurs gear up for another run at a championship, NBA fans should take a step back and appreciate how good the Spurs have been and continue to be.

From Robinson to Duncan
April 22, 2012This all started with David Robinson, believe it or not. The most underrated part of success in the NBA, by far, is team chemistry, and that’s something that the Spurs have had in spades for a long time now. As other teams struggle to construct their team with big stars and enormous expectations before they even take the court, the Spurs have proven what can be done with a system you can believe in, an elite coach and a completely selfless superstar. And it’s in having that selfless superstar in Tim Duncan that has provided the corner stone for the Spurs for more than a decade. Many fans are likely surprised that they’re in place to finish as the number one overall seed, though they shouldn’t be.

Western Conference: Contenders
April 19, 2012The Western Conference has an eclectic mix of teams with title aspirations, making it about as wide open as it’s ever been. Here’s a look at the teams considered the contenders heading into the playoffs.

Should the Spurs Rebuild?
May 2, 2011ESPN’s Rich Bucher thinks it’s time for the San Antonio Spurs to rebuild after being knocked off by the Memphis Grizzlies over the weekend. “The San Antonio Spurs, if they want to get back to their championship-contending ways, have to face the harsh reality that their Big Three core — Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker — is not good enough and will not be good enough going forward to lift a fifth Larry O’Brien trophy,” Bucher writes. The Spurs were eliminated by the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round despite being the top playoff seed in the Western Conference.

Grizz Upset Spurs
April 18, 2011The Memphis Grizzlies netted the first playoff win in the history of the franchise yesterday, taking down the San Antonio Spurs in the first matchup of their first round series. The Grizzlies were powered by power forward Zach Randolph in their 101-98 victory, as Randolph dropped 25 points and 14 rebounds. Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said he was glad to get the monkey off the franchise’s back. “It’s nice from an annoyance perspective to have it out of the way, because I don’t have to answer questions about being 0 and 13,” Hollins told reporters.

NBA Power Rankings
April 5, 2011The top two teams in Marc Stein’s NBA Power Rankings stayed the same this week, as the Lakers held into the top spot and the Bulls remained at number two. However, people might be surprised to see who Stein has in the three hole, the Denver Nuggets. “Maybe there remains a stray question or two about what kind of road team these new Nuggets are … if you want to nitpick,” Stein writes. “But they’re the NBA’s third-best team since the All-Star break (15-4) and an easy choice for No. 3 here.” Does anyone want to play Denver in the postseason?

Option Candidates
March 21, 2011ESPN’s Chad Ford lays out the players that could be free agents this coming offseason if either they or their teams decline options in their contract. San Antonio’s Tim Duncan tops the list, but nobody expects him to be going anywhere. Denver center Nene, the number two player on Ford’s list, has professed his desire to stay with the Nuggets, but will probably opt out of his deal for a pay raise. “When he’s healthy, Hilario remains one of the unique big men in the league,” Ford writes. “He’s quick and physical, and he can be a handful in the paint when he wants to be.”

NBA Power Rankings
March 8, 2011There’s a new number one in Marc Stein’s NBA Power Rankings this week, the defending champs. The Lakers leaped from fifth on last week’s list thanks to some statement performances. “Everyone who said that the Lakers have too much size and too much Kobe to worry about their various periods of malaise during the first 50-odd games … we can hear you revving up your Told You Sos from here,” Stein writes. The Lakers’ dominance of the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday speaks to how good this team can be when they’re firing on all cylinders.
