Rubio in for T-Wolves
June 17, 2011The Ricky Rubio saga looks to finally coming to the United States, as the talented and highly touted point guard finally has confirmed that he will be coming over to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves next season. Rubio was formerly drafted by the T-Wolves, though he then elected to stay in Spain for the past couple of seasons while he gets a little more time on the professional level before joining the NBA. The T-Wolves selected Rubio with the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft, then were roundly criticized when Rubio ended up staying overseas for the past two seasons.

Biyombo a Fit in Minnesota
May 11, 2011The 2011 NBA Draft class is a weak one, there’s no way of getting around that. ESPN’s David Thorpe suggests that this will cause a lot of teams to draft based on need, as opposed to selecting the best player available. Thorpe says that the Timberwolves, the team with the best chance to win the lottery later this month, are a great fit for international big man Bismack Biyombo, though they can’t use the top pick on him if they land it. “Though they still own the rights to Ricky Rubio and sit on a very disappointing — but talented — Jonny Flynn, the Wolves clearly will have to consider taking Kyrie Irving, of course,” he writes. “But pairing up your best player with a complementary one makes sense, and if the Wolves decide to go that route, they’ll have to consider Bismack Biyombo.”

Ford’s First Round Mock Draft
May 9, 2011ESPN NBA Draft expert Chad Ford has posted his first full first round mock draft of the pre-draft season. Ford, with the draft order based on record until the lottery pays out, has the Minnesota Timberwolves selecting Duke point guard Kyrie Irving with the top overall pick. He notes that Minny GM David Kahn has already acquired five point guards at point in his regime, but says that this time it would be the right move. “Irving, on the other hand, makes perfect sense for the young Wolves,” Ford writes. “He has the most potential of any of the guards Kahn has recruited. He also has a high basketball IQ, can shoot (something the Wolves really need) and is a high-character player (another thing they could use).”

Love Breaks Double-Double Record
March 10, 2011Remember when Kevin Love couldn’t crack the starting lineup for the Minnesota Timberwolves last season? That seems like ages ago, now that Love has broken the record for consecutive double-doubles with his 52nd last night. Love wasn’t sure he was going to play in last night’s game against the Pacers until just minutes before tip-off, as he was battling a sore knee. “I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get up and down the court with how stiff it was,” Love told reporters after the game. “But I think I made the right choice, not only did I get that [mark], but more importantly we got the win.”

NBA Awards Watch
March 9, 2011Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose is the MVP to this point in the season, according to ESPN’s Maurice Brooks and his Awards Watch. “While the Heat continue to struggle against elite teams, Rose and the Bulls have owned those matchups (11-6),” Brooks writes. ”He is top 10 in the league in assists and scoring.” Rose has consistently put the team on his back late in games and has the Bulls in the running for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Rose, just in his third season in the pros, is certainly making good on all the potential he showed when the team selected him with the top pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
