Nene Could Opt Out
May 3, 2011The Denver Nuggets had quite the late-season surge after trading Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks. They played as a team and maximized their talent that way, but they do have quite a bit of talent. One player that was big down the stretch was center Nene, who can opt out of his current contract with the Nuggets this offseason and become an unrestricted free agent. Chris Dempsey of The Denver Post seems to think that Nene opting out is a very real possibility. “After nine seasons in the NBA, Nene has full control of his future and it could take hard work for the Nuggets to make him happy enough to return,” Dempsey writes.

NBA Power Rankings
April 5, 2011The top two teams in Marc Stein’s NBA Power Rankings stayed the same this week, as the Lakers held into the top spot and the Bulls remained at number two. However, people might be surprised to see who Stein has in the three hole, the Denver Nuggets. “Maybe there remains a stray question or two about what kind of road team these new Nuggets are … if you want to nitpick,” Stein writes. “But they’re the NBA’s third-best team since the All-Star break (15-4) and an easy choice for No. 3 here.” Does anyone want to play Denver in the postseason?

Option Candidates
March 21, 2011ESPN’s Chad Ford lays out the players that could be free agents this coming offseason if either they or their teams decline options in their contract. San Antonio’s Tim Duncan tops the list, but nobody expects him to be going anywhere. Denver center Nene, the number two player on Ford’s list, has professed his desire to stay with the Nuggets, but will probably opt out of his deal for a pay raise. “When he’s healthy, Hilario remains one of the unique big men in the league,” Ford writes. “He’s quick and physical, and he can be a handful in the paint when he wants to be.”

NBA Cinderellas
March 18, 2011In the spirit of March Madness, the NBA experts at ESPN have predicted potential “Cinderellas” in the coming NBA postseason. Chris Broussard likes the New York Knicks as a potential upset alert. “New York is probably the most dangerous underdog,” Broussard writes. ”I know their defense reeks, but in Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire they’ve got two veteran superstars who have been to the conference finals and won’t be overwhelmed or intimidated by the moment.” The Knicks are a streaky team, so they could take down an Eastern Conference power if they get hot, but they could also get swept.
