  • Irving Goes Number One to Cavs
    June 24, 2011

The last time the Cleveland Cavaliers had the number one pick, they ended up drafting a well-known player straight out of high school.  Maybe you’ve heard of him: LeBron James.  Well, that one went very well for seven years before finally exploding when LeBron bolted for Miami.  This season, however, the Cavs got a chance to start all over again by grabbing the number one pick in the lottery.  Though the draft class was considered fairly weak overall, the Cavs were still happy to snag Duke point guard Kyrie Irving with the number one overall pick, giving them the type of explosive player that they will look to rebound around.  Irving is considered a natural at the point guard position with an excellent court IQ and playmaking ability, though many worried about him not being explosive enough to be a number one overall pick.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have had a mighty fall from grace this season.  They went from the top seed in the Eastern Conference in 2009-10 to the worst record in the conference in 2010-11.  ESPN’s Tom Haberstroh outlines what their plans for the daft may be.  “Hoard draft picks and pray they work out,” he jokes.  “It doesn’t sound like a rock-solid approach, but neither was closing their eyes and hoping LeBron James would return.”  The Cavs have two picks likely to be in the Top 10, which could allow them to take a major step forward in the rebuilding process of this franchise.
