  • World Series is Turning into a Classic
    October 26, 2011

A matchup between the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers isn’t what most baseball fans had in mind this year, as many were expecting the Yankees or Red Sox to be playing the Phillies when it came down to the Fall Classic.  Well, the St. Louis Cardinals had a different plan and now find themselves coming home with a chance to get back in the series, though it won’t be easy down 3-2 to the equally as surprising Texas Rangers.  In one of the closest World Series’ in memory, two very hot teams have clashed and we’ve seen plenty of late-inning drama.

  • Cruz Sinks Tigers
    October 13, 2011

Nelson Cruz is making a name for himself this postseason, and Wednesday night he added another big piece to the story.  With the game in doubt in the top of the 11th, Cruz belted a huge three-run homer to put the game away, extending the Rangers’ lead in the ALCS to 3-1. The Tigers had some fight, with Brad Inge belted a huge homer in the bottom of the ninth to push the game into extras, they’ll now have a tremendously uphill battle if they’re to take down the Rangers and scoot into the World Series.

  • Cabrera, Fister Pull Tigers to 2-1
    October 12, 2011

When the Tigers desperately needed someone to step up, both Miguel Cabrera and Doug Fister answered the call.  Fister went 7 1/3 strong innings, letting up just two earned runs and giving the Tigers a change.  And take charge the Tigers eventually did, as Victor Martinez hit a bit homer and Miguel Cabrera belted a big double early on to give the Tigers a lead, one they would never give up.  Cabrera would help put the game away too, as he crushed a homer in the seventh to all but end the Rangers’ hopes of pushing the series to 3-0.

  • Rangers and Angels Should Be Battle
    August 5, 2011

Though the A.L. West was a little all over the map earlier in the season, it looks like the cream has risen to the top, setting up a great divisional battle between the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels, who currently sit just a game apart atop the standings.  Though both teams have their flaws, it’s their well-rounded rosters that have them competing at a high level and helping them both pull away from the A’s and Mariners in the division.  For the Angels, they’re led by their dynamic trio of starting pitchers that has really picked it up.  Though Dan Haren and Jared Weaver, the latter being likely the Cy Young this season, have anchored the staff throughout the year, it’s been the resurgent Ervin Santana who has finally found a groove to help keep the Angels nipping at the heels of the Rangers.

  • MLB Power Rankings
    May 4, 2011

The Philadelphia Phillies retained the top spot in this week’s ESPN MLB Power Rankings.  “Roy Halladay has allowed only one home run in 46.1 innings,” ESPN.com notes.  “He also threw an amazing 18 straight strikes to begin his last start, a complete-game, 2-1 win over the Mets on Saturday.”  The Phillies are 18-9 on the season and have the best rotation in the major leagues.  Halladay has been as good as expected, while Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels might even be exceeding their own respective expectations.  Cliff Lee has been hit hard at times, but he’s going to come around, and it’s not like he’s getting shelled regularly.

  • MLB Power Rankings
    April 18, 2011

The Colorado Rockies are the new top team in ESPN’s MLB Power Rankings.  “Owners of baseball’s best record, the Rockies are being driven by the amazing Troy Tulowitzki, who already has seven homers this year,” it says in the rankings.  “Hits like a young Nomar Garciaparra, fields like a young Cal Ripken.”  That’s some serious praise for Tulo, but it’s well deserved.  He’s looking like the early MVP favorite in the National League.  The Texas Rangers fell one spot, dropping to second on the list.  The loss of Josh Hamilton is going to hurt, but this club can hit even without their best player.

  • Fantasy Baseball: Early Bat Steals
    April 13, 2011

Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp had a tough season in 2010, but he’s off to a fantastic start in 2011.  Fantasy owners must be thrilled with his seven stolen bases in just 36 at-bats.  Kemp is also hitting a crazy .472 and has driven in six runs thus far.  If he’s finally having his breakout season, fantasy owners will have stolen him for the most past this season.  Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz is having a great start to the season as well, hitting five home runs already.  He’s leading the league in dingers and has driven in 11 run as well.  If he stays healthy, he’ll end up being a huge steal.
