ESPN’s David Schoenfield outlined his All-Underrated team. He notes Cleveland Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo as the most underrated player on his team. “I think he’s our most underrated MVP,” Schoenfield writes. “One of the best all-around players in the majors last season (second in the AL in Baseball-Reference WAR, eighth in FanGraphs WAR). And to think Cleveland stole him from Seattle for Ben Broussard.” Fantasy owners certainly know who Choo is and his worth in the fantasy game, and are also well accustomed to his streaky nature. Still, I must agree that he’s one of the more underrated players in the game right now.
One questionable selection he makes is Braves catcher Brian McCann, who is fairly recognizable among baseball fans. “Can a five-time All-Star be underrated? Schoenfield writes. :I think so, if only because he’s never started in one of those games. Sure, us baseball seamheads know how good he’s been the past half decade, but since 2006 he has more RBIs than Victor Martinez or Joe Mauer, more home runs than Mauer and Yadier Molina combined and a higher OPS than Martinez.” Those statistics were pretty surprising, and the candidates at catcher are pretty slim pickings, but I don’t see McCann as too underrated.
