Kimbrel, Johnson Look Dominant
April 29, 2012Here’s a look at the top five fantasy relief pitchers as we’re close to the end of the first month of the regular season.
1. Jim Johnson, Orioles:
Part of Johnson’s success has been that the Orioles are playing much better than anticipated, but kudos for Johnson for converting the opportunities he’s been given. Though Johnson isn’t much of a strikeout threat, he’s been perfect this season and he should be a high value guy if you were able to get him. If you get the right price, though, Johnson is the kind of guy you might want to consider selling.

April 27, 2012With the baseball season just about a month in, there is the usual combination of surprises, though many of the big names are once again putting up big numbers. Here’s a look at the type five hitters so far this fantasy season.

Ranking the Top Fantasy Outfielders
March 20, 2012Fielding an outfield requires a nice combination of speed and power, and there are plenty of great options heading into the 2012 season. Here’s a look at the outfielders you should target this year.

Player Spotlight: Clayton Kershaw
July 21, 2011For those not in the know, Clayton Kershaw is a star in the big leagues. Though his talent has gotten him by up until this point, causing many managers to drool over the what he might turn into someday, it looks like the future is now for Kershaw and Giants fans. After starting the season slowly, Kershaw has really come on strong and has really taken it up a notch in July, putting him in the company with the very best pitchers in the league this year. In July, Kershaw is 3-1 with a 1.86 ERA, a stretch that includes a recent masterpiece against the Giants, a game in which he went eight shutout innings.

A Few Names Contend for Triple Crown
June 22, 2011Though the Triple Crown has remained one of the most elusive accomplishments in baseball, there are a few players potentially making a major run at making it happen this season. The most impressive so far, of course, is Adrian Gonzalez, who has come over from the Padres to put up an MVP caliber season in his first year in Boston. As of June 22, Gonzalez was leading the A.L. in hitting (.354) and RBIs (68) while posting a solid 15 homers. Though he’s nowhere near the top of the leader board in home runs, he’s also steadily gaining after he got off to a slow start in the power department early in the season.

Fantasy Baseball: Early Bat Steals
April 13, 2011Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp had a tough season in 2010, but he’s off to a fantastic start in 2011. Fantasy owners must be thrilled with his seven stolen bases in just 36 at-bats. Kemp is also hitting a crazy .472 and has driven in six runs thus far. If he’s finally having his breakout season, fantasy owners will have stolen him for the most past this season. Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz is having a great start to the season as well, hitting five home runs already. He’s leading the league in dingers and has driven in 11 run as well. If he stays healthy, he’ll end up being a huge steal.

Dodgers’ Time is Now
March 18, 2011The time is now for the Los Angeles Dodgers, or at least it better be. With five core players set to hit free agency following the 2011 or 2012 season, it’s unlikely we’ll see all of them back in Dodger Blue in 2013. Closer Jonathan Broxton will be a free agent after this season, while Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Chad Billingsley and James Loney will hit the market following 2012. “At approximately the same time as those players are hitting the open market, the next group of prospects — Jerry Sands, Dee Gordon, Trayvon Robinson, Zach Lee and Rubby De La Rosa — should be ready for the big leagues,” writes ESPN Los Angeles’ Ramona Shelburne. “All of which makes this year one of the last chances for this group of kids to finally grow up.”

When Does Spring Training Matter?
March 16, 2011The debate over whether preseason matters is one that runs rampant as each league’s season gets going. In the NFL, the best players in the league barely even play in the games. ESPN’s Buster Olney currently has an interesting article up discussing for whom spring training matters this year and for whom is does not. Olney notes that for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the spring matters a lot. “Arizona is 5-16 this spring, and in most years, the staff members wouldn’t care,” Olney writes. ”But the Diamondbacks are coming off a terrible year in which their general manager (Josh Byrnes) and manager (A.J. Hinch) were fired, and manager Kirk Gibson has been drilling the team relentlessly.”

Kershaw’s Efficiency and the Associated Fantasy Stigma
March 14, 2011ESPN fantasy writer Tristan Cockcroft has an interesting list up on ESPN.com right now. Cockcroft lists ten players that have been saddled with a potentially undeserved stigma. The first issue he addressed is the common opinion that Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw’s high pitch counts stop him from going deep into games, thus hurting his win total. “Judging by some of the winter feedback, this was a commonly held belief exiting the 2010 season, but appears to have been dispelled in early 2011 drafts, at least judging by Kershaw’s No. 39 (39.4) ESPN average draft position,” Cockcroft writes. “People wouldn’t draft him that soon — and remember that I ranked him 34th overall so I’m even higher on him — if they didn’t trust his fantasy-ace ability, but at the same time, there might be some owners who look at that number and think, ‘Wait, what, a fourth-rounder?! Wasn’t this the guy who won only eight games as a full-time starter just two years ago, and who has 26 wins in 83 career starts?’”
