  • Lincecum, Hernandez Still Elite
    March 23, 2012

Here are the top starting pitching options following Roy Halladay, Justin Verlander, Cliff Lee, Jared Weaver and Clayton Kershaw.

    6.  Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners:

Hernandez unfortunately pitches for the team that scored the least runs in the league in 2011, so you can’t expect a lot of wins for King Felix.  Having said that, he typically pitches very deep into the game, racks up strikeouts and wins just about every time the Mariners put up any runs.

  • Rangers and Angels Should Be Battle
    August 5, 2011

Though the A.L. West was a little all over the map earlier in the season, it looks like the cream has risen to the top, setting up a great divisional battle between the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels, who currently sit just a game apart atop the standings.  Though both teams have their flaws, it’s their well-rounded rosters that have them competing at a high level and helping them both pull away from the A’s and Mariners in the division.  For the Angels, they’re led by their dynamic trio of starting pitchers that has really picked it up.  Though Dan Haren and Jared Weaver, the latter being likely the Cy Young this season, have anchored the staff throughout the year, it’s been the resurgent Ervin Santana who has finally found a groove to help keep the Angels nipping at the heels of the Rangers.

  • Cy Young Talk: C.C. vs. Weaver
    July 27, 2011

After winning a Cy Young already and establishing himself as one of the elite pitchers in baseball, C.C. Sabathia is taking up another notch this season.  With a 2.56 ERA and 15-5 record on the season, Sabathia is not only holding the Yankees’ starting rotation together but one would think he would be in line for the Cy Young.  But there’s a problem: Jared Weaver.  While Sabathia has pitched well, Weaver has been the best pitcher in the game pretty much from the get-go this season, which has helped push him to a 14-4 record and 1.79 ERA.  With numbers like that, it will be impossible to vote for Sabathia no matter how many wins he ends up tallying.

  • Fantasy Spotlight: Jared Weaver
    July 14, 2011

Those who have been paying attention already know that Jared Weaver is an elite pitcher in this league.  Though he doesn’t generate the type of fanfare as Roy Halladay and C.C. Sabathia, Weaver is putting together a fairly brilliant career, which he continues to add to as we head into the second half of the season.  After Weaver led the A.L. in strikeouts last season, we probably should have been more in the know about his potential, though none of us were expecting the type of season he has put together so far.

  • Closer Sleepers
    April 7, 2011

We’ve already seen one closer lose his job this season, as Fernando Rodney has yielded the Angels’ closer job to Jordan Walden, which prompted ESPN fantasy baseball expert Tristan Cockcroft to discuss some other potential sleeper options in the closer stables.  Cockcroft notes Kansas City’s Tim Collins as a potential option if Joakim Soria were to be traded.  “It’s not that Collins could overtake Joakim Soria, it’s that Soria has been a subject of trade rumors for a while now, and if the Royals look to trade him, they’ll need to look hard for a replacement” he writes.  “AL-only owners might find Collins’ ratios and K’s helpful, and who knows, maybe he’ll be next in line.”
