  • All-Around Hitters on Display in 2011
    September 27, 2011

The days of being a .245 masher with great power and no ability to hit RBI singles is long over, as the top hitters in the league can do a little bit of everything at the plate – except bunt, of course.  Guys like Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Jose Bautista, Adrian Gonzalez and Matt Kemp all put up huge numbers this year, with Pujols actually having the least impressive season out of the whole group.  Still, each player should finish at .300 or better with Kemp even making a real run at the Triple Crown.  Cabrera is even hitting an MLB-best .343 with just a couple games left and both Jose Bautista and Adrian Gonzalez are well over .300.

  • Every Game is Crucial for Red Sox
    September 27, 2011

True, many are already whispering about who is to blame for the epic collapse of the Boston Red Sox, but manager Terry Francona had some words of wisdom for his team after another loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.  It’s not over, he mused, trying to push off the criticism and get his team focus on the task at hand.  Tied in the Wildcard race with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Red Sox head into a matchup with the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night desperately needing a win, as the Yankees could be resting players once again today and don’t have much incentive to beat the Rays.

  • Red Sox Explode, Crush Blue Jays
    September 14, 2011

The Red Sox haven’t had the best of runs in recent days, though you couldn’t have been able to tell that on Tuesday night.  Amid worries about even making the playoffs, the Red Sox exploded for 18 runs and one of the best offensive days of the entire year in Major League Baseball.  Dustin Pedroia led the way by smacking two homers, two doubles and driving in five total runs.  Pedroia now has 20 homers on the season and pushed his RBI total up to 82 while batting a solid .300 for the season, giving him arguably his most productive season so far in his career.

  • Red Sox Downed By Jays, 11-10
    September 8, 2011

The Red Sox once again had their bats out in force, but their bullpen couldn’t match Toronto’s as they got some clutch hits late in the game.  Edwin Encarnacion was the big hero for Toronto, as he had two big hits in the eighth inning, as the Blue Jays stormed back to take the lead and eventually the win.  Encarnacion belted a single to start the eighth inning scoring and then cleared the bases with a three-run double that cleared the bases to give the Jays the lead.  Daniel Bard was the Red Sox pitcher on the mound when it all fell apart, but the bullpen as a whole hasn’t been great this month.

  • Red Sox Bounce Back
    September 7, 2011

The Boston Red Sox couldn’t do anything offensively on Monday, but that changed quickly as the Red Sox crushed the Orioles 14-0 on Tuesday.  While Jon Lester pitched a great game, the Red Sox hit the ball all over the yard, bashing out 20 hits and scoring at least two runs in each of the first five innings.  David Ortiz and Marco Scutaro were the offensive stars of the night, each mashing four hits and driving in a combined six RBIs.  With the big day, Ortiz raised his batting average to .318, completing a great comeback season for Big Papi, who just a few years ago was considered an elite left-handed hitter.

  • Red Sox Continue to Mash
    August 25, 2011

The Red Sox once again put on a hitting clinic in Texas on Wednesday, knocking 16 hits and scoring 13 runs as Josh Beckett was sharp once again.  With the win, the Red Sox were able to stay a full game up on the Yankees, who also won at home against Oakland.  With David Ortiz getting back into the lineup, it was Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford that mostly carried the way, each belting a homer and putting up big offensive days.  Jacoby Ellsbury, as per usual, also got into the mix, smashing his 23rd homer of the season and also swiping his 35th base.  Though both Adrian Gonzalez and New York’s Curtis Granderson will demand plenty of MVP talk, so will Ellsbury, who has been the most valuable leadoff hitter in the league this year.
