Kimbrel Puts Together Record Season
August 23, 2011Fantasy owners looked a Craig Kimbrel and were hoping that he was nearly as good as he looked last year in a brief stint with the Atlanta Braves. Well, it looks like he’s much better than that, as he continues to put together a brilliant season in Atlanta and has been nothing short of a dominant force in the Braves bullpen – a crucial one that has helped them get a strangle-hold on the Wildcard race. On Tuesday, Kimbrel was at it again as he struck out two Chicago Cubs in a scoreless nine to hammer down his 40th save of the season – a record-high for rookie closers.

Jurrjens Continues Phenomenal Season
July 7, 2011After winning his 12th game of the season to lead the National League, Jair Jurrjens simply continues to impress. Coming off of a disappointed and injury-plagued 2010 campaign, Jurrjens wasn’t exactly high on the radar of fantasy gurus this this year for a reason. Though everyone acknowledged his talent, you aren’t a star pitcher until you actually put together a season to suggest that you are. And now it seems that Jurrjens has. How good has Jurrjens been this year? Through 16 starts, Jurrjens has a 1.87 with 12 wins against just three losses. With those type of numbers, he’s even better than he was in 2009, the year he took everyone by storm by putting up a 2.60 ERA and 14-10 record.

Hudson Outshines Greinke
May 5, 2011Last night’s Braves-Brewers game was billed as Zack Greinke’s debut for Milwaukee, but he was easily overshadowed by opposing starting pitcher Tim Hudson, who pitched a complete game one-hitter to secure the win for the Bravos. Hudson faced just 29 batters on the night, while struggled. The former American League Cy Young winner lasted just four innings, giving up five runs in the process. “I guess the end result’s bad. For the most part, I pitched decent,” Greinke said after the game. ”The way Hudson was pitching it wouldn’t matter anyway.”

MLB All-Underrated Team
April 20, 2011ESPN’s David Schoenfield outlined his All-Underrated team. He notes Cleveland Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo as the most underrated player on his team. “I think he’s our most underrated MVP,” Schoenfield writes. “One of the best all-around players in the majors last season (second in the AL in Baseball-Reference WAR, eighth in FanGraphs WAR). And to think Cleveland stole him from Seattle for Ben Broussard.” Fantasy owners certainly know who Choo is and his worth in the fantasy game, and are also well accustomed to his streaky nature. Still, I must agree that he’s one of the more underrated players in the game right now.
